Charleston, South Carolina Marriage License Information - Tying the Knot in the Holy City


All couples getting married in Charleston, regardless of the state in which they reside, are required to obtain a South Carolina marriage license. We recommend getting your license from Charleston County as it is easy and convenient (everything is done online!). Below are simple instructions regarding the process.



Step 1: Verify Eligibility and Requirements

Before diving into the online application process, it's essential to ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria and have the necessary documents. Both parties must be at least 18 years old and have identification documents such as a driver's licenses or passport.


Step 2: Visit the Charleston County Probate Court Website

Submit a marriage license application with the Charleston County Probate Court by visiting their website (you can click here).


Step 3: Complete the Online Application

Upload the requested documents and complete all required fields. Double-check your information before submitting to avoid any delays.


Step 4: Pay the Application Fee

There is a $70 application fee that is also paid through the website.


Step 5: Receiving Your Marriage License

After completing the online application and paying the fee, you'll receive an email confirmation. 24 hours later your license will be sent to you as a PDF. You can forward the license to your officiant and he or she will take care of everything else (including printing the forms, bringing them to the ceremony, instructing the couple on where to sign, supply you with a copy, and forwarding the remaining copies to the courthouse)
